Where We're From

Now that you have explored your identity by writing a poem using metaphors,
learn about your classmates' identities by reading their poems.

Each of the metaphors in your poem says something about you.
These metaphors connect you to a specific group of people, geographical places,
religion, various interests, and other things.
These words may imply meanings much deeper than the actual object they represent.
They may also be interpreted similarly or differently than the author's intention,
based on the reader's understandings and experiences.

1. On the "Where I'm From" wiki, click on "show all pages"
(under "wiki information" on the lower right side of the frame)
and select one of your classmates' names.
Read his or her poem and post a comment relating a metaphor in that poem
to a similar metaphor in your own poem.
How does that metaphor play a role in your life?

2. Now, read another poem and find a metaphor that identifies a difference
between where you and the author are “from.”
Within your post ask the author a question about how that metaphor
plays a role in his or her life.

3. Finally, find a poem with a metaphor that you do not understand.
Post a response on that page asking the author to explain the metaphor
and detail the role it plays in his or her life.

After you have made your three required comments,
return to your own page or those of others. Read, respond, and contemplate.
